About the artist
James Spearman was born in Monticello Georgia; at age 5 his family relocated to Detroit Michigan where he was educated and began his career as an artist.
Spearman graduated from Wayne State University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Art and specializing in Interior Architectural Design and Space Planning.
His medium is oil on canvas using a variety of subjects, figurative, portraits, landscapes and animals. He is known for his bold colors and meticulous detailed work. A selected number of prints have been distributed nationally by Things Graphics and Fine Arts. Many of his original pieces are owned by collectors throughout the country.
Spearman's career achievements include participation in many events throughout the country such as the Juried event, "The Black Creativity Art Exhibit" in Chicago, IL. In 2003, Spearman was commissioned by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland Ohio, co-sponsored by Ford Motor Company and the Arts League of Michigan to paint “Soul of Rock” the signature piece for the touring exhibit “Rock My Soul.” In 2015 he was commissioned to create a bronze metal sculpture of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Task Force. The bust is now on permanent exhibit at the Southfield Library in Southfield Michigan.
In 2007, Spearman moved to Columbia Tennessee where he currently resides with his wife Delphine.
He continues to paint and sell his art nationally and currently teaches art for HAPI, (Healing Art Project, Inc.) sense 2008.
